Call for Participants: Mayworks Festival | Published February 2nd, 2012

First Meeting: Sudbury February 26th from 3-5pm, 139 Durham Street. Across from the YMCA and above Village International.

Myths and Mirrors is partnering with local community members, workers, unions and artists to help bring to Sudbury the very first annual May Works. May Works, founded in 1986 and held in many cities across Canada, is a multi-disciplinary arts festival that celebrates working class culture.

This is an official call out to ANYONE who is interested in working on a community visual art project dealing with the issues of work. What does your work mean to you? What are your hopes and desires for your work? What struggles does your work, or lack there of, present you?

Mayworks’ artistic vision is specifically guided by our equity policy that recognizes the systemic discrimination and injustices faced by equity-seeking groups, and designates women, First Nations people, people of colour and queer-identified people as being disadvantaged in our society. (Mayworks website)

We encourage those of you in Sudbury who have faced discrimination in the work sphere to come and share your story through art. Please contact us if you are interested in participating. Artists and non artists are welcome to participate. Email, facebook or call sarahkg@mac.com or (705) 507-2340.

Check out May Works official website for more info on what other cities are doing – www.mayworks.ca.

It is time we brought this labour focused festival to SUDBURY!!!!! Join us to make it happen!

Ryan Heights Youth Centre Mural | Published May 25th, 2012

At the end of March we wrapped up our 2 and half month project with the youth of Ryan Heights. Over January, February and March of this year we engaged the youth in a mural which helped them connect personally and collectively to the new space, offered to them by the City of Greater Sudbury. The city runs an after school program for the youth and the desire for the mural was to help the youth and the workers make the space theirs while building their small community’s relationships. All of those who passed through the walls were invited to offer their silhouette to be traced on the wall. Then they were invited to paint their personal touch on their shape. The youth and workers of this place became part of the space and a special part of them was reflected through the images and words they chose to describe themselves. To see the process and outcome of this wonderfully vibrant mural click here.

Please bring donations of exterior and interior paint, exterior varnish, scrap wood or metal and anything else you or others might like to add to the signs. We have the tools to cut, paint and build our signs. If you don’t have any supplies that is fine, we will provide what we can. In the spirit of the occupy movement, we will make due with what is at hand! Monetary donations are welcome as well.
