Alt-Right got you down? Worried about hate groups putting up posters across our town? Well it’s time that we do something about it the best way we know how to… with paint, paper and some glue.
On October 25th, Myths and Mirrors hosted a poster-making session for everyone that wants to help stand up against these groups and send a different message. Not one of hate… but one of art.
About a dozen people attended the poster-making session and now we’re excited to share their work so keep an eye out downtown as we spread some Art Against Hate.
Myths and Mirrors,
This is excellent healing work. It is so upsetting to see hate graffiti where we live- and can be very intimidating, too. Please do share your art intervention strategy with other cities and towns. Love is the greatest- hate is very temporary. Way to take back your streets and show everyone that they are welcome. Beautiful posters. I don’t think our police services have appropriate training to follow up on issues that hate graffiti indicate- something we could bring to their attention maybe, is the need to have strategies for following up on the who, what, where and why about the hate signs. Are people afraid? Have they witnessed crime that they cannot report? Is the news the fright? Or is there a threatening gang presence in the city? There is always a ‘reason’ for the action of creating hate messages. For each possibility, there are proven and practiced investigation and intervention strategies that work to create change and improve security. The art-intervention is so inspired and so non-police oriented that it also has a powerful transformative and healing effect. – Leanne Flynn
